Greetings,
February already. It's hard to believe.
I've been having difficulty with my distribution list. Hence no E.News in January. I'm sending this out with my fingers crossed. Please let me know if you have any strange experiences (only regarding the receipt of this e.news please).
We have seen such environmental devastation and human tragedy this year. Through our televisions we have experienced such a range of emotions as a result of the tsunami and the havoc it reeked and the lives and families destroyed. I would like to balance this, which does not mean that I wish to trivialise this event, with the fact that, according to some, we live in the freest, most peaceful, longest-lived era in history. So I would urge you to focus on what's right in your life and the world.
And … on that note, I'm happy to advise that I've successfully passed the Diploma in Life Coaching. So - to see if coaching would be useful to you book a free sample session.

A CST (CranioSacral Therapy) Story
Jane (not her real name) had experienced whiplash over Christmas as a result of a car accident. During her lifetime she had sustained several whiplashes and minor head and neck trauma. Also, some years ago, she had an incident with a fish bone which lodged in her throat. To remove it the doctors had bent her neck right back and suctioned it out - a painful and traumatic experience for her. The tissue memory of these areas was therefore one of trauma and pain. Jane has regular osteopathic treatment for her neck and is very protective of it. She warned me that rotation of the skull induced nausea.
I treated her by first allowing some release and homeostasis (balance) to return to the sacrum (heart-shaped bone at the end of the spine) and the occiput (the sides of the base of the skull), the cerebrospinal fluid and the membranes down the spine …. Gently, moving her neck and head only as far as the tissue would allow, her neck and the base of her skull began to release and unwind the tension and whiplash. I found that the tissue at the back of the throat felt traumatised. With a finger very gently in her mouth I facilitated a release of this tissue (probably a result of the fish bone). This and other techniques also helped the base of the skull to release as never before. Jane is aware of the underlying emotional content of the tissue and may do something about this in her own way (she's a shiatsu practitioner) in the future. My remit for this treatment was to stop the pain/make her more comfortable.

Orange Juice
We recently got a carton of Co-op home brand orange juice only to find a warning that it is not suitable for vegans for the juice may have been made from fruit coated with shellac!!! The oranges used were from Brazil and USA. How many other brands are not declaring this amazing and outrageous fact?

Wheat
Ancient wheat was about 2% protein. Modern hybrids can contain as much as 14% protein, largely due to genetic manipulation in the misguided belief that wheat is a convenient vehicle to rectify the world's protein malnutrition. Unfortunately, most of the harmful fractions of wheat, such as the lectins, are found in the protein portion of the grain.

Aqua Detox therapy
Detox and rebalance your body's systems.
We can't avoid pollutants and toxins in one form or another these days and most of us lead busy and stressful lives. So the opportunity of being able to relax and enjoy a half hour of `time-out' plus being able to detoxify without dieting, sweating or strange drinks is very attractive.
Aqua Detox aims to improve:
liver and kidney function, circulation, arthritis, inflammation, general metabolism, headaches, menstrual pain, skin problems, mercury & heavy, metal detoxification, generally balances the whole body and enhances well being
Aqua Detox can also be used as part of a detox diet plan.
Aqua Detox is an electromagnetic detoxification process carried out on the feet. This is a convenient and efficient therapy to clean and purify your body. (See website for client experiences.)

Yoga - Dale Spence DO, ND, BYO Dip
(On cosmetics and Kylie Minogue's bum)
I observed a discussion the other day with some amazement. Apparently there is a move to get yoga recognised as an Olympic sport. An entrant has already been chosen to represent Britain. From what I am told she is a fine young woman - an ex-dancer, very athletic and flexible with a beautiful smile and a bum better than Kylie Minogue's.
Well, there we have the West's opinion and understanding of yoga. This echoes a Swami's comments that “all yoga in the West is cosmetic”.
To be fair and to put it into context somewhat, the idea of yoga competitions is nothing new. They have been common in India for ages. As our learned Swami commented, if a hundred people come to yoga for the wrong reasons, and even one stays for the right reasons, is that a bad thing? And I have to say I agree. Besides, we all have to start somewhere. Also it probably isn't fair to point a finger exclusively at the West for its primarily physical approach to yoga. I think that attitude can be found in the East too.
For me that comment “all yoga in the West is cosmetic” really struck home. That is exactly what I am trying not to do in my classes. Which is not to say that the physical is not important - it is. Time invested in your own health is good. A large part of each class is asana - improving strength, muscle tone, flexibility and health generally. But more than just that. We work on breathing and energy. We work on concentration and focus of attention, on the quality of our own perception and relaxation. Some of these practices you normally only really get into in an ashram type environment. I am trying to get some degree of practice and progression in these areas in a normal class, while still living in the world. While still trying to get to work on time, buy the groceries, pick up the kids, de-worm the cat.
A better yardstick of progress in yoga might be the ability to concentrate and remain calm in the midst of chaos. To move gracefully through life and not be overly swayed by the ups and downs. The acid test of all perhaps, the degree of love and forgiveness you feel for the guy who has just wheel clamped you when you've double parked on the yellow line and dashed in to drop off the video. Mmm - I've got further to go than I thought. Still, progress is something that I aspire to, and, I have to say, I am enjoying my journey.

Anxiety is not an outside force. It exists entirely within your own thoughts.
Anxiety is nothing more than a response you choose. And just as surely as you can choose to experience anxiety, you can choose to let it go.
Without your thoughts, anxiety cannot exist. It has no power of its own, and there is no reason to hold on to it.
Instead of being blinded by your anxious thoughts, open your eyes to the positive possibilities. Instead of using your energy to support thoughts of anxiety, you can use that energy to move yourself forward.
Allow love to fill the places where anxiety now resides. Feel a warm sense of peace and serenity as your anxious thoughts melt away.
See what happens when you choose to respond with love, with gratitude, with acceptance and positive expectations. With a calm mind and a peaceful heart, you are free to be your very best.
- Ralph Marston

Finish each day and be done with it.
You have done what you could.
Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in;
Forget them as soon as you can.
Tomorrow is a new day;
Begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit
To be encumbered with your old nonsense.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
It's cheap...It foams a lot...It thickens with salt.
[After I read this article I checked the products that I use and even the most simple product contains this ingredient - anything that needs to foam. In some products it is called sodium laureth sulfate.]
SLS can be found in the following:
Harsh floor cleaners
Engine degreasers
Car wash detergents
Laundry detergents
Toothpaste
Shampoos
Body gels
Bubble baths
Facial cleansers
Baby wipes
Baby shampoos and bubble baths
SLS can damage the immune system, causing separation of skin layers and inflammation of skin.
- Journal of the American College of Toxicology; Vol 2, No 7 1983
SLS penetrates into the skin and into the eyes, and is also held in the brain, heart and liver. A single drop stays in the brain and body for a few days.
Doctor's worry: Is your baby safe?
- David L. Kern, New Health and Longevity
SLS denatures proteins of eye tissues, impairing eye development permanently.
- Dr Keith Green, PhD, D.Sc, Medical College of Georgia
SLS is a mutagen. It is capable of changing the information in genetic material found in cells. SLS has been used in studies to induce mutagen in bacteria.
- Higuchi, Araya and Higuchi, School of Medicine, Tohoku University: Sendai 980 Japan
SLS is a potent carcinogen when contaminated with nitrosamines.
- FDA Report 1978
