3. A CST (CranioSacral Therapy) Story
Mary, not her real name, came to see me because she had recently had surgery for breast cancer and had just begun radiotherapy. She also said she had a TMJ (lower jaw) problem and recurring migraine. During the treatment Mary talked about her experience with cancer and what was happening in her life now. Mary is in her late 30's and is married with 3 step-children. The cancer drug she is taking has caused premature menopause. Mary feels a deep sadness connected to this. It is recognized now that trauma and emotion can be held in the tissue (reference the Vietnamese Veterans Rehabilitation program, Upledger Institute, Florida). In Mary's case this emotion was `held' at the bottom of the breast bone, the ziphoid process. Using a technique called SomatoEmotional ReleaseÒ (SER) Mary discovered and was able to release this sadness and a feeling of guilt that was linked to her being a twin. Mary was born prematurely and her twin was still born. She has experienced feelings of guilt all her life although she never knew the reason.
What emerged during Mary's treatment was a surprise to her and explained a lot of her feelings and actions in her life. Now that Mary is conscious of the source or reason for some of her feelings and actions and has released the tissue she can begin to move forward in certain areas of her life. This was Mary's first treatment and there is more that can be explored and released using this and other craniosacral techniques.
4. Candle Warning
The Journal of Holistic Healthcare reports that recent evidence shows that many candles contain heavy metals such as lead or cadmium. The burning of multiple candles, particularly scented candles, can lead to high levels of indoor pollutants.

5. Healing Power of Coffee
At last someone speaking FOR coffee - just my cup of … ! In an article in the Los Angeles Times, Peter Jaret suggests that “coffee's reputation is being rehabilitated by many large-scale research studies.”
The 1960's Honolulu Heart Programme asked 8,000 Japanese-American men how much they drank and 40 years later found no link to heart disease. In fact, according to neurologist Webster Ross, those who drank up to 6 cups a day were 5 times less likely to develop Parkinson's disease. Caffeine appears to protect brain cells from the damage that leads to Parkinson's. A surprising result from the researchers at Harvard found that people who drank 4/5 cups a day cut their risk of Type 2 diabetes by 30%. A compound in coffee that appears to protect against colon cancer was identified by scientists at Germany's University of Munster. Cardiff University psychologist, Andrew Smith says that “studies show that the caffeine in a cup of coffee can increase alertness and improve performance on tests of mental function.” For more than 30 years 1,000 former medical students were tracked by doctors at John Hopkins University, USA. In 1999 and 2002 the Harvard School of Public Health looked at data from 46,008 men and 80,898 women respectively, re the risk of coffee drinkers developing gallstones. The evidence suggested the more coffee people drank, the lower their risk of developing gallstones. Caffeine has been found to temporarily raise blood pressure slightly. Several studies though, conclude that caffeine doesn't cause hypertension.
A few concerns persist though. “Caffeine can aggravate arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) so cardiologists sometimes advise people with such conditions to drink decaf. Insomnia sufferers are also typically advised to give up caffeinated coffee, especially late in the day and evening. Because caffeine can make its way into breast milk, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that nursing mothers drink decaf coffee or other non-caffeinated beverages.”
According to a Greek study a cup a day protects against heart disease - but NOT if you drink a lot more. At this point in time experts agree that it is safe to drink up to 3 cups a day. Webster Ross says “recent evidence show there's less to worry about than we once thought and perhaps some unexpected benefits.”

7. Yoga
I saw a quip the other day that I thought was great and well sums up yoga. (It actually wasn't anything to do with yoga - but I'll borrow it all the same…)
“Yoga is not about standing on your head, it's all about standing on your own
two feet.”
In my experience, that sums it up. I have been working with the sequences that we do in class for some time now. There are times when my practice is, how shall I put it, not as regular as it could be. When I skip practice I really feel it, and this thought struck home the other day while hobbling up the stairs nursing a sore hip. For me it really isn't optional. Yet a good practice and everything freed up again, and now the discomfort is gone. It doesn't have to be hours a day. Just three rounds of Salute to the Sun is enough to start things moving. You can feel the change, the muscles and joints opening up. You can feel movement becoming easier, tone, flexibility and wellbeing increasing, being more comfortable in your skin, restrictions to movement being pushed back. As with anything, results are in proportion to the effort you put in. But it does not take much to start making a difference which you can feel.
I was standing watching some students moving in a class of mine, towards the end of last term. I was thinking back to how they moved when I first encountered them. The improvement is huge - greater strength, flexibility, tone, balance, flow and grace of movement generally. Yoga practice does make a difference. Do it and you'll find yourself standing on your own two feet with greater strength, grace and certainty. On that note I'll wish you all a blessed Christmas and a New Year increasing in wisdom, clarity and contentment.
Open the door to the possibility of a different future!
8. Life Coaching
I believe it's important to pay attention to how we spend our time on earth. If something isn't working in your life you have the choice to change it. We always have a choice - don't confuse hard choice with no choice.
7 Tips to change
Put yourself at the top of the list. Do you have a hard time putting your needs before others and end up feeling frustrated and resentful about the commitments you make?
Learn to make the practice of extreme self-care your new standard for living. Learn to be self-ish. Build a strong relationship with yourself and connect with your inner wisdom/intuition.
Get your priorities right. Do you feel exhausted at the end of the day and have difficulty finding time to do the things that are most important to you?
Stop reacting to life and start taking control of what gets your time and attention. Set new priorities that reflect what's really important to you and learn strategies to ensure that they are honoured.
What's draining you? Does your life feel like one long to-do list that never seem to be completed? Do you feel drained by a friend/relative who constantly complains or does your office still needs organising or is your home full of clutter?
Identify and eliminate what's draining you - disorganised office, cluttered home or a friend. Plug those energy drains!
Invest in your financial health. Are you tired of not being able to make the choices you want because of money constraints. Do you have debt, are you struggling to make ends meet or feel dissatisfied about the way you spend your money?
Learn ways to get your finances in order and build reserves so you no longer feel like a victim of life. Basic money management skills will attract more money.
What's fuelling you? Are you constantly running from one appointment to the next? Can you slow down and relax? Is peace of mind impossible?
Quit the adrenalin habit and use healthier forms of energy such as the company of good friends, fun exercise and soul nurturing activities.
Build a `soulful' community. Do you feel isolated or disconnected from others and long to share a deeper connection with a community of like-minded people?
Surround yourself with a community of high-quality relationships that will support, challenge and encourage you to be your best.
Honour your spiritual well-being. Would you like to spend consistent time in meditation, prayer, practicing yoga or other forms of spiritual self-care but life keeps getting in the way?
Take time for the most important relationship - your connection with your inner wisdom/intuition, the voice of your soul. Create a personal practice and spend time every day nurturing your spiritual well-being.

11. What Doctors Don't Tell You:
Vaccine Linked to MS: New study confirms worst suspicions over the hepatitis B jab
”After years of speculation, it's finally been confirmed that the hepatitis B vaccine causes multiple sclerosis (MS). Researchers from Harvard estimate that it increases the risk by over three times, but they're not sure if the vaccine causes MS in those prone to it, or if it just speeds its progress.
This link may also mean that the vaccine could cause other serious auto-immune diseases, as many have suspected.
Suspicions were first raised around 10 years ago when 200 people in France developed MS shortly after being given the hepatitis B vaccine. But an earlier Harvard study, published in 2001, could find no link. Since then several members of the original research team have voiced their concerns that their conclusions may have been wrong.
This time the Harvard team has been more emphatic, and has even said that the benefits of the vaccine only might outweigh the risks. In medicalese, that's a very big 'might'.”
