Greetings,
I've been talking about change for months, and as you can see ….. it's filtered in to this area of my life - I've changed my logo. I've found myself having to re-evaluate what works and what doesn't work in my life; what I want and what I don't want, and then letting go of those old, thoughts, ideas and structures that aren't working or what I want at this time of my life. So, I've been trying some new things - I've had unusual detoxing therapy, checked my astrology chart, been to a workshop I wouldn't normally have attended and increased my exercise regime. I've also taken time out to be with people I like and don't normally have time to be with (so good for the soul). My limitations and boundaries have had a good stretch and I feel better for it!
I wish you all a wonderful relaxing and refreshing summer.
The truth is that everything is a miracle and wonder.

I'd Pick More Daisies
If I had my life to live over,
I'd try to make more mistakes next time.
I would relax. I would limber up.
I would be sillier than I have been this trip.
I would be crazier.
I would take more chances.
I would take more trips.
I would climb more mountains, swim more rivers and watch more sunsets.
I would have more actual troubles and fewer imaginary ones.
If I had it to do over again,
I would go places and do things.
And travel lighter than I have.
If I had my life to live over,
I would start barefooted earlier in the spring.
And stay that way later in the fall.
I wouldn't make such good grades except by accident.
I would ride on merry-go-rounds.
I'd pick more daisies.

The Last 2 Weeks (of an embryo's life)
The seventh and eighth week are the last two weeks of an embryo's life. After the eighth week this wee bundle of developing cells is suddenly known as the foetus.
During the seventh week the embryo will reach a length of ¾ - 1 inch from crown to rump. Newly formed fingers and hands begin to move. Visible now are the internal organs and differentiated genitals. So you can determine the sex of your baby from the seventh week.
This week sees the first ossification (formation of bone) from cartilage in the skull, ribs, shoulder blades, the bones of the arms and legs and the hard palate of the mouth. The nervous system makes a huge leap in development. The grey and white matter of the brain is created and the muscles that will take their orders from the motor part of the nervous system are apparent. These muscles begin to move during the seventh week of embryonic life - the first flutters which Mum is likely to feel. The pupils of the eye forms and the nose becomes more prominent. The eyelids and ears can be seen and the neck begins to lengthen. “The upper lips are formed and will be completed by the end of the eighth week. Interference with this process during the seventh and eighth weeks by disease, toxicity, emotional upset and the like may result in a harelip.”
Remarkable development is going on in the brain. The pineal gland is formed in the back subdivision of the primitive forebrain. “The pineal gland is highly controversial even today.” There are many beliefs relating to this gland, some of which are that it relates to the circadian rhythms / it is involved with the immune system / it is a part of the magnetic system that keeps us oriented within the magnetic field of the earth.
In the back subdivision of the primitive forebrain, the choroid plexus begin to form. This is a system that extracts cerebrospinal fluid from blood.
The embryo measures about 1?- 1¼ inches at this eighth week, the end of the embryonic period of gestation. All the organ systems are now established and from now on these systems will develop and refine, but all the foundations are now laid.
Finger and toe joints and the clefts between fingers and toes are present. Upper and lower divisions of arms and legs are distinct and the ossification of the bones of these limbs and the hip bones is visible. The vertebrae are now cartilaginous and the two halves of the hard palate have united. Salivary glands are present and the heart is well developed. The spleen and the beginnings of the adrenal glands are present and the lenses in the eyes begin to develop and the membrane covering the pupil of the eyes is present.
Phenomenal development has occurred in the nervous system. By the end of this eighth week all the cells that will form the nerve cells in the entire nervous system are present. Wow!
“Clinically the significance of the end of this embryonic period of development is simply that problems during the first eight weeks of pregnancy usually result in a defective design or the absence of a part or structure within a given system in the newborn. Since after the eighth week all of the building blocks for all of the systems are present, problems that appear in the second phase (foetal phase) of the pregnancy result in lack of growth and or development for the affected part of the system. The latter situation offers greater hope of remediation by treatment than does the former.”
And so once again, if you're trying for a baby it's a good idea to make sure that the building blocks for the baby are optimum i.e. Mum and Dad. Take a few months to make sure you're physically very healthy.
CranioSacral Therapy helps with this and helps make sure all Mum's and baby's systems are working well so that the foetus has the best possible chance. It also helps with the change the pelvis needs to make to during last stages of pregnancy and birth itself.

The Role of Visualisation/Imagination in Health
I touched on this subject in the November 2002 issue. I feel (and know from my own experience) the large part that imagination and visualisation plays in disease and illness, health and healing. New therapies are being developed (it seems every week) and more and more is being discovered about our bodies and the way they work.
“Research has shown that not only are seeing in the minds' eye and seeing in the external world similar processes, but that the brain cannot distinguish between them.”
“Physiological effects can also be induced by the psychological and emotional information conveyed in visual images. These effects may also be induced unconsciously in so far that a person may be unaware that the mental pictures s/he habitually generates in response to psychological experiences have physiological consequences. For instance, if you always see yourself threatened by others your body will constantly be alert to defend you. Your heart rate and blood pressure will be raised and your muscles tense. By changing negative images to positive ones, fear and its physiological effects can be overcome.”
It has been suggested, by cancer specialists Carl and Stephanie Simonton, that as emotional and psychological factors play a significant role both in susceptibility to and recovery from all disease, the first step in getting well is to understand how these factors have contributed to illness and to find ways of influencing them in support of treatment.
Imagination/visualisation seems to form a bridge between mind and body allowing information to cross from the psychological to the physical.
This is not `new' information. Dr Upledger reports in his book Cell Talk that the Russians were doing research into the power of suggestion in the healing process in the early 1950's. And visualisation has been a part of yoga practice for thousands of years.
These techniques of visualisation are used therapeutically in CranioSacral therapy for the release of traumatic emotional memory from tissue, in assisting the immune system, all the body's systems, in fact, to come into balance.

CranioSacral Therapy FAQ's
How can I benefit from CranioSacral therapy?
The therapy will surprise you with benefits you hadn't known were possible, including the resolution of symptoms that you had no idea were related to the cranial system or to each other. You may feel lighter, with a sense of more spaciousness within yourself. You may notice more ease in relationships or ability to focus. After a period of adjustment, in which you may feel a little spacey or experience the shadows of a past symptom on its way out, you may notice that you stand straighter or breathe more easily and deeply, with less effort. Pains may decrease, organs function better, and emotional boundaries may be easier to maintain. Because each person is unique, it is impossible to say exactly what benefit you will feel, or how long it will take you to feel it.
Who could benefit from CST?
Everyone, from new born to the elderly, can benefit though with some the improvement may be more dramatic than with others.
Children respond well to CST because it is gentle, non-invasive, and effective in ways they can intuitively recognise. CST is also recommended during pregnancy, as it calms the nervous system of both mother and baby and helps Mum's body adapt to the changes that take place, especially during the last trimester. It will also help the birth process itself, and any birth trauma baby may experience.
What kind of symptoms respond best to CranioSacral therapy?
Impingement of cranial nerves or spinal nerves, left-right imbalances, head injuries, confusion, feelings of compression or pressure, anxiety, depression, circulatory disorders, organ dysfunctions, learning difficulties, neuro-endocrine problems, TMJ and dental problems, and trauma of all kinds - birth, falls, accidents and other injuries, physical, sexual or emotional abuse, PTSD, loss/grief, surgery, anesthesia - all are good indicators that a visit to your CranioSacral therapist will be helpful. CranioSacral therapy is also excellent as a preventive therapy as it can facilitate the resolution of imbalances within a client's system that she/he may not be consciously aware of.

Yoga - Yoga and Visualisation Dale Spence ND, DO, BWY Dip
One theme of this issue has been visualisation. This is something we can work with in yoga practice in various ways. The sixth of Patanjali's eight limbs of yoga is concentration (or dharana). Visualisation is a component of concentration.
We can work with visualisation in the physical asana work. For example - you can create in your mind a mental picture of the final position and then move into that picture. Or having achieved the final position you can visualise lengthening between the finger tips, or lengthening up the spinal column. Both of these uses of visualisation add another dimension into asana work. Working with visualisation in the asanas is also an aid to focusing and concentration. You are not going to be visualising effectively if you are thinking about whether your spouse remembered the cat food. There needs to be awareness in the posture.
“Visualness” is one component of our perception, and happens at many levels. One of the effects of yoga practice is the gradual clarifying or refining of perception. This automatically happens as our ability to concentrate increases. This affects both the external and internal sense of seeing. We start to pay more attention to what we are physically seeing around us. It also affects the internal element of visualisation, to “see with the mind's eye”. It is something more than imagination. Perception is tied in to awareness. If we had no sensory input at all - we would find it hard to be aware of anything. As perception clarifies the level of awareness can deepen. It becomes a circular relationship - as awareness deepens perception deepens. This is why visualisation can be an effective part of meditation.
A personal comment here, I think visualisation as a tool in meditation is distinct from a practice fairly common in western yoga classes of “guided visualisation”. I think they are very different practices.
When we use visualisation throughout the entire practice - postures (asana), breathing (pranayama) and concentration (dharana) - deep relaxation automatically follows. A calm and focused relaxation. The level of concentration throughout the whole practice is deepened.
As Desikachar comments on one of Patanjali's Sutras (2:23) “All that is perceived, whatever it is and whatever its effect may be on a particular individual, has but one ultimate purpose. That is to clarify the distinction between the external that is seen and the internal that sees”. And a little later in (2:27) “The attainment of clarity is a gradual process”.
This briefly describes the threading of visualisation through one's practice, how it can be incorporated and where it might lead.
