Greetings,
I can't believe this will be my last newsletter for 2003. It's just whizzed by. So much to do and so little time to do it - one of my pet themes in the past few months. At the beginning of this new academic year I found that I had signed up to do two fairly lengthy courses (that's not counting the CPD - continuing practitioner development courses that I do throughout the year)! Dale and I are doing an NCFE 1 year Spanish course and I'm doing a foundation course in Life Coaching. Ouch! I've just completed a lovely 1-day CranioSacral therapy and meridians workshop and in April 2004 will be going to Florida to do an intensive 4-day CST and the Immune System. AND, this is the time of the year to sit by the fire (though it's hardly cold enough at the moment) and plan for the coming new year. I fully intend to take some time to do just that.
May you enjoy this winter time of gathering your energy, dreaming and planning. I wish you Merry Christmas and may 2004 be filled with all the wonderful things you dreamed and planned.
May you find serenity and tranquillity in a world you may not always understand.
May the pain you have known and conflict you have experienced give you the strength to walk through life facing each new situation with courage and optimism.
Always know that there are those whose love and understanding will always be there, even when you feel most alone.
May you discover enough goodness in others to believe in a world of peace.
May a kind word, a reassuring touch, a warm smile be yours every day of your life, and may you give these gifts as well as receive them.
Remember the sunshine when the storm seems unending.
Teach love to those who know hate, and let that love embrace you as you go into the world.
May the teaching of those you admire become part of you, so that you may call upon them. Remember, those whose lives you have touched and who have touched yours are always a part of you, even if the encounters were less than you would have wished. It is the content of the encounter that is more important than its form.
May you not become too concerned with material matters, but instead place immeasurable value on the goodness in your heart.
Find time in each day to see the beauty and love in the world around you.
Realize that each person has limitless abilities, but each of us is different in our own way. What you may feel you lack in one regard may be more than compensated for in another. What you feel you lack in the present may become one of your strengths in the future.
May you see your future as one filled with promise and possibility. Learn to view everything as a worthwhile experience.
May you find enough inner strength to determine your own worth by yourself, and not be dependent on another's judgements of your accomplishments.
May you always feel loved.
Migraine and CST
The migraine headache remains one of the most prevalent and puzzling conditions in the medical community today. "Migraine" has been used by some doctors as a catchall phrase to classify intense head pain. But as anyone who suffers true migraines will tell you, it's so much more than that. The key to long-term success is relieving the underlying cause of the migraine in addition to releasing the pain.
Few structures in the human body have as much influence over its ability to function properly as the brain and spinal cord that make up the central nervous system. And few systems have as much impact on the brain and spinal cord as the membranes and fluids that surround and protect them which are collectively called the craniosacral system.
CranioSacral Therapy has been used successfully to relieve a variety of sensory and/or motor neurological dysfunctions. In addition to headaches, neck and back pain, it's been used effectively on jaw dysfunction, chronic fatigue, muscle coordination difficulties, depression, eye problems, hyperactivity, central nervous system disorders and many other conditions.
With migraine headaches ., of course, there can be multiple causes. Virtually anything that interferes with the autonomic nervous control of the blood vessels in the head can result in migraine. In general, CranioSacral Therapy does a very good job of normalising autonomic nervous activity. It effectively mobilises the membrane system within the head to take pressure off either the nerve that is controlling the blood vessel, or the blood vessel that may be causing the headache. It is also an effective stress reducer, which makes it particularly effective with migraines since they're often precipitated or triggered by stress.

Salicylic Acid. Blood levels of salicylic acid were up to 12 times higher in 37 vegetarians than in 39 meat and fish-eaters, all in their early 40's, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Pathology. This may explain the lowere rates of heart disease amongst vegetarians. Salicylic acid is the main anti-inflammatory component of asprin, which has also been linked with reduced risk of bowel, breast and lung cancer as well as Alzheimer's disease. Although the anti-clotting properties of asprin are not attained through dietary fruit and vegetables, most cardiovascular disease is a chronic inflammatory process. Even very low levels of dietary salicylic acid were shown to inhibit powerful pro-inflammatory enzymes. [www.mercola.com]

Iron: Take some, even if you're just feeling a little rusty. Women can suddenly feel tired and fatigued, a problem that can affect even the very young. But when they're checked for anaemia, their iron levels are fine.
Despite this, they would benefit from iron supplementation, new research suggests.
Researchers from Lausanne University, Switzerland tested 144 women, aged between 18 and 55 years, and gave them either 80 mg of oral ferrous sulphate a day or a placebo, even though nobody in either group was anaemic.
After four weeks those given iron supplements had lower levels of fatigue than when they started compared with the placebo group.
Their findings mirror earlier studies that monitored the health of non-anaemic women. They all suggest that medicine takes a simplistic view. Anaemia is merely the end-point of iron deficiency, and we all need more iron in our diets, or through supplementation, to help us through our stressful lives.
Alliums protect. A recent study found that a diet rich in garlic, onions, shallots, leeks and scallions may cut the risk of prostate cancer. People in China, which has the lowest rate of prostrate cancer in the world, use these ingredients as a staple of cooking. The study surveyed 200 men with prostate cancer and 500 healthy men in Shanghai and the results were clear: men who ate small amounts of onions, garlic, scallions, shallots and leeks each day decreased their risk of prostate cancer by more than 33%. Those who ate 2 grams of garlic per day decreased their risk of prostate cancer by more than 50%. Scallions were found to be more beneficial, lowering the risk of prostate cancer by 70%.

What Doctors Don't Tell You : WHEAT INTOLERANCE
“It's worse than doctors thought.
Now here's a funny thing. Many people we know seem to have wheat or gluten intolerance (although fewer have a full-blown allergy), but if you talk to doctors you'd think that almost nobody had it. Instead, doctors have tended to put its prevalence down to hysteria or attention seeking, especially if the patient happens to be female.
But it's something that even the family doctor may now have to take
seriously after scientists in Finland discovered that it's a problem
that has been dramatically under-diagnosed.
They were searching for the more rare celiac disease, an autoimmune response to wheat, rye and barley that, in children, can affect their development. The scientists discovered the disease in 1 in 67 of the 3,654 students, aged from 7 to 16 years, whose blood they tested.
The condition was far more prevalent than the scientists expected and, even allowing for dubious sampling, they conclude that 1 in 99 schoolchildren have celiac disease, and in most of these cases it's probably undetected.
So if celiac disease is at the farther end of a spectrum of gluten-related problems, wheat intolerance must affect many more than 1 in 99 children or adults. This suggests that most of our friends do indeed have a gluten problem, and that they're not, after all, hysterical or attention seeking.

CranioSacral Therapy FAQ's
What is CranioSacral Therapy?
Craniosacral therapy is a very gentle hands-on body therapy. It is a way of working with the anatomical structures, the physiological systems and the body's inherent biological wisdom to restore balance and health.
Does CranioSacral involve manipulations?
Craniosacral therapy is not a manipulative therapy. The healing process comes from within the client, not from the outside with the practitioner. The practitioner's hand contacts are based on listening and following the tissues and the client's process rather than pushing or manipulating the client towards a theoretical ideal state.
What kind of symptoms respond best to CranioSacral therapy?
CranioSacral therapy is beneficial to mother and baby before and after birth, after surgery, falls and accidents, acute or long-term pain, neck and back pain, PTS, autism and drug abuse (prescription or recreational). For a more comprehensive list see www.wanimo.co.uk
Why do I "fall asleep" during my CranioSacral therapy sessions?
It is common for people to doze off or at least appear to sleep during portions of a CranioSacral treatment. Some report hearing themselves snore! There are probably times when a deep, perhaps meditative state of consciousness is contacted, or when the mind needs to get out of the way to allow the system to reorganise in some profound way. It may also be that you are tired but have pushed yourself to keep going, taking caffeine and straining your adrenals. Sometimes your practitioner may ask you occasional questions about what you are sensing in your body, to assist the processing. Other times we will let you rest, appreciating that most healing takes place in deep sleep or deep relaxation.
Still Point Inducer (or as I call them “bumps”)
This is a simple device that looks like two mountains or bumps, to use to induce a state of deep relaxation. Many of my client's have found it valuable in reducing headaches and muscle pain and helping insomnia (my personal favourite). (I also use it myself between CST treatments when I feel the need.) Other benefits are enhancement of immune system efficiency and encouragement of the body's natural health.
“Cerebrospinal fluid bathes and flushes every cell of the brain. It carries in nutrients, washes away waste products, and helps control pH levels. Since CST and the proper daily use of the Still Point Inducer enhances the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, it becomes an effective health enhancer for your brain and spinal cord.” - Dr John Upledger, Developer of CST
