Greetings,
Just as I think we're really into winter, we have, as I write, a gorgeous Indian Summer day. This time of the year is a time for relaxation after the summer. A time for reflection and for nurture: for appreciating the balance of Life - the yin and yang, the light and dark, summer and winter, external and internal.
I love the following quote and feel it appropriate at this time when the sounds of war echo in our ears, and indications of change are all around us.
This is the last newsletter of the year soooo I wish you a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.
When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.

The Hopi Elders Speak
You have been telling the people that this is the Eleventh Hour.
Now you must go back and tell the people that this is the Hour.
And there are things to be considered:
Where are you living?
What are you doing?
What are your relationships?
Are you in right relation?
Where is your water?
Know your garden.
It is time to speak your Truth.
Create your community.
Be good to each other.
And do not look outside yourself for the leader.
This could be a good time! There is a river flowing now very fast. It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid. They will try to hold on to the shore. They will feel they are being torn apart and they will suffer greatly.
Know the river has its destination. The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off into the middle of the river, keep our eyes open, and our heads above the water. See who is in there with you and celebrate.
At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally. Least of all, ourselves. For the moment that we do, our spiritual growth and journey comes to a halt. The time of the lone wolf is over.
Gather yourselves! Banish the word struggle from your attitude and your vocabulary. All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration. We are the ones we've been waiting for.

The Role of Visualisation/Imagination in Health
“Jungian therapy essentially comprises various techniques for deliberately mobilising active imagination. This consists of suspending the critical faculty, allowing emotions, fantasies and waking dream images to emerge from the unconscious and confronting them as though they are objectively present. In this way the person actively interacts with these energies, albeit within the imagination, personifying them as images and entering into discourse with them. It is not merely looking passively at images as though projected on a screen but more like a play in which dialogue goes back and forth between the personified image and the self that produced it, providing information and understanding of the dynamics of the psyche.”
SomatoEmotional Release (a component of CranioSacral Therapy) uses these techniques to release the energy or memory of physical or emotional trauma from body parts, regions or organs.
“Research has shown that not only are seeing in the minds' eye and seeing in the external world similar processes, but that the brain cannot distinguish between them.”
“Depending on what a person imagines, the same neutral molecule can be converted to a painkiller, a stimulant, a tranquilliser, an immunosuppressant, and anti-cancer compound or a substance that reduces blood pressure.” Reversing this process, the body part or organ can relay, to the mind, information regarding its trauma, state of health and even what it needs to return to health.
“Visual images serve a number of important functions:
They give us a different way of looking at things, a different perspective on them, which promotes cognitive flexibility and functioning and aids planning, problem solving, decision making and creative thinking.
They provide a great deal of complex information very quickly.
They allow us to turn things over in our minds and to solve problems without the time, effort or risk involved in tackling these problems in the external world.
Because visual images are to all intents and purposes the same as visual percepts we can rehearse activities and skilled performance in the mind without risk.
Visual images provide insight into ordinary unconscious, nonverbal processes, whether physiological, psychological or emotional.
Visual images also help mobilise healing processes within the body.
“Albert Einstein claimed that he had no special talent other than his imagination. He revealed that the experiments under-pinning quantum physics were conducted in his head rather than the laboratory. “

Some interesting research
Babywalkers delay unassisted standing and walking in infants according to researchers at University College, Dublin. Having had a look at 190 healthy babies attending day care centres, they found strong associations between babywalker use and developmental delay. Every 24 hours of aggregated babywalker use was associated, on average, with a delay of 3.7 days in standing alone and 3.3 days walking alone.
This study provides additional evidence that babywalkers are associated with signigicant delay in achieving normal locomotor milestones, concluded the researchers.
As reported in Essentially Oils newsletter #126, Sept, 2002
When stressed, we experience raised blood pressure, heart and breathing rates, straining the body and lowering immunity, says Dr Herbett Benson of Harvard Medical School. In studies, Dr Benson has found that an opposite response can be elicited by repeating a prayer, word, sound, phrase or movement, while disregarding other thoughts. Meditation, prayer, t'ai chi and yoga all promote this healthy state. Reader's Digest Sept. 2002
Flower Essence of the month: Father Sun and Winter Jasmine)
Father Sun - Sonchus arvensis
Father Sun shows us how to comfort, support and counsel ourselves - to realise that we have within us the strength, guidance and positivity that we have sought from others. By re-connecting with our own divine Sun Father/Self we are able to comfort and reassure our inner child, banishing its fears with the positive, revitalising warmth and light of the sun - restoring courage, strength, and purpose.
Father Sun helps to heal old grief and the feelings of vulnerability, lack of strength and longing for support, that often arise in reaction to the loss of one's father or the loss of a male partner. This essence also addresses anxiety and grief over losing the warmth and light of the sun as autumn begins. It inspires us to find ways to warm and strengthen our body and spirit through the cold, dark days of winter - and to feel the sun shining in our hearts.
For those who are sensitive and have a strong connection to moon, water and earth energy: Father Sun helps to embody within us the lion-hearted, masculine radiance of the sun in order that we may feel robust and confident enough to fully interact with the world.
Winter Jasmine Jasminum nudiflorum
Light in the dark; inspiration and joy in our darkest times; upliftment; inspiration from the natural world; feeling at home in winter.
Indications: for when it is hard to find the light; testing times; Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

The Story of Life - The First 4 Weeks of Life
The first eight weeks of gestational life (after fertilisation) are termed the embryonic period. All organs, systems and tissues are put in place during this eight week period. The remaining 30-34 weeks spent in the mother's uterus are for growth, development and refinement of these organs, systems and tissues. So, if something goes wrong in the first eight weeks, it may result in a defectively designed structure or system whereas, if the problem occurs after the eighth week, it will more likely result in a failure of growth, development or refinement of the involved structure or system. This latter situation is more amenable to treatment.
By the end of the third gestational week of embryonic life a lot has happened. There are certain folds/curves that have occurred in the embryo that signify the beginnings of brain formation. The primary divisions of the brain are now visible. These are precursors of eyes and ears, and are spoken of as ocular and auditory vesicles, respectively. A primary system for blood circulation is established and a rudimentary heart is starting to beat. The mouth to anus alimentary canal is formed. It connects with the yolk sac as a source of nourishment. The ends of arms and legs are present. A pouch-like formation (diverticulation) in the primitive oral cavity appears during the third week. By the end of the sixth week this has become the pituitary gland. [The pituitary gland orchestrates the endocrine system.] Brachial arches are present, which in fish will become gills, but in the human embryo they will form many of the structures of the head and neck. The beginnings of the urinary system and excretory organs called Wolffian bodies are present. This is a great deal of work and development that has happened in just three weeks.
During the third and fourth weeks certain cells make a cartilaginous plate which forms a floor, a base for the skull. Ultimately, this cartilage will calcify and the bones of the floor of the skull will be the result. The foramen magnum (Latin = big hole) forms. This is the hole in the base of the skull which allows the spinal cord to pass through and become one with the brain. The outer surface of the skull comes from the membrane that encases the primitive brain. The membrane calcifies and forms the bones of the skull vault and this process continues almost throughout the whole pregnancy and until the fontanels are closed during infancy.
During the fourth week more rapid development takes place. The embryo is about three to four millimetres long. The beginnings of an umbilicus or belly button is present. The arms and legs are growing rapidly. The anus and rectum, called a cloaca at this stage, are developing. During this fourth week the rudimentary heart divides into right and left sides. It began as a two-chambered pump and now it becomes a four-chambered pump. The lungs and pancreas develop. The face develops and the openings for the nose become apparent. Special nerve ganglia (centres) and motor nerve roots from the spinal cord are now visible. Cells that form the vertebral column migrate and surround the newly forming spinal cord. Things are moving very, very quickly.
By the end of the fourth week the marginal layer nerve fibres appear. During this developmental process, we have millions and perhaps billions of young neurons discovering just where they belong anatomically. They go to the correct destinations with a very high degree of accuracy, and once there send out connecting fibres that can grow to one plus metres in length. These connecting fibres travel through a maze of other fibres and tissues to their assigned destinations where they begin to function correctly. This is probably the most effectively engineered process that one can imagine.
Whew, what a lot has happened and you're probably not even aware that you're pregnant yet! So, if you're trying for a baby it's a good idea to make sure that the building blocks for the baby are optimum i.e. Mum and Dad. Take a few months to make sure you're physically very healthy.
CranioSacral Therapy helps make sure all Mum's systems are working well so that the foetus has the best possible chance. It also helps with the change the pelvis needs to make to during last stages of pregnancy and delivery.

The Moon from Moon Magick by D J Conway
Moon Lore: The Gaelic word for fortune comes from “that which denotes a Full Moon.” The Druids believed that when the circle of the Moon was complete, good fortune was given to those who knew how to ask the gods for it.
The name Mount St. Helens means “Moon Mountain”.
The word “create” comes from the same word-root as the word “crescent”.
Blood Moon, Moon of the Changing Season. 6 October - 4 November. Full moon on 21 October. This moon month takes its name from the old Roman custom of killing and salting livestock before the season made it impossible to feed them. A four month long festival called the Makahiki was celebrated by the ancient Hawaiians during which time they had games, pageantry, the hula, surfing, feasting and tax collecting! The Celtic year ended on the eve before Samhain (31st Oct).
Snow Moon, Fog Moon. 4 November - 4 December. Full moon on 20 November. Novem was the nineth month in the oldest Roman calendar.
Cold Moon, Oak Moon. 4 December - 2 January. Full moon on 20 December. Winter solstice on 21st - a time when the sun turns from its fall into darkness into gaining light and was celebrated around the world. Decem was the tenth month in the old Roman calendar.

Yoga - where does asana fit? Dale Spence ND, DO, BWY Dip
Last issue we looked briefly at Patanjali's eight limb (or ashtanga) system of yoga. This represents one approach to the practice of yoga. I would also like to introduce the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. This is another of the few well known and reliable classic yoga texts. The word pradipika means 'self illuminating', or 'that which illumines'. It illumines a multitude of physical, mental and spiritual issues that face an aspirant. It was written by Yogi Swatmarama.
“In ancient times hatha yoga was practised for many years as a preparation for higher states of consciousness. Now however, the real purpose of this great science has been altogether forgotten. The practices which were designed by the rishis and sages of old, for the evolution of mankind, are now being understood and utilised in a very limited sense.”
The first two limbs of Patanjali's system are the yamas and the niyamas, and there are five of each of them. The five yamas (or abstentions from evil-doing, or attitudes towards our environment) include non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, chastity (or restraint) and non-hoarding.
The five niyamas (or observances, or attitudes towards ourselves) include purity, contentment, austerity, study and devotion.
There is a marked similarity between the yamas and niyamas and the “Twelve Commandments” of Christianity. The third and forth limbs are asana (physical postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises). Most yoga classes in the west deal primarily with asana - the third limb.
Patanjali was influenced by the Buddhist philosophy with its `Eightfold Path' and system of ethics along the lines of yama and niyama. In Patanjali's system the starting point was with the moral condition of the practitioner - in self control and self discipline. Without that it was not appropriate to proceed further. By contrast Swatmarama in the Pradipika pays little attention to self control and self discipline. He says that to practice yama and niyama you need a certain quality of mind. If harmony is not created in the personality then trying to force self-control will create more conflict than peace of mind. He says that you should first purify the whole body - the stomach, intestines, nervous system and other systems. Hence shatkarma (the six actions) come first. These six cleansing practices are aimed at purifying the body of the six impurities. After this then practice asana and pranayama. Self-control and self-discipline start with the body. Asana is discipline, pranayama is discipline, breath retention is self-control.
I think that one of the fundamental principles of yoga practice is to start at the place you are currently at with what you have in the condition that you are in. The past is not ours to change, the future is out of reach. What we do have is the here and now. In terms of where to start in the practice of yoga, I think that asana is a good place to start. If the body is weak and sickly then growth and development in any area is hard. First get the body strong and healthy. In osteopathic circles there is continuing debate over structure versus function - and which is the more important. They are both inextricably linked - as you change one the other is automatically changed also. As progress (function) is made with asana practice (structure), automatically one experiences increases in awareness, increases in the ability to concentrate, refinement of perception (function).
