Greetings,
As we move swiftly into the year 2002 I feel excited about it’s potential. I think that 2002 is such a balanced and harmonious looking number and the possibility of enjoying those qualities is there - as well as experiencing the opposite. The choice is ours - yours and mine.
The days are lengthening, and like the bear stirring from hibernation I am beginning to think and plan for the year ahead.
I wish you a balanced and harmonious year and quote Epictetus, "Fortify yourself with contentment for this is an impregnable fortress."
 Human soul asks the question
Today the human soul asks the question: What can I do to preserve the beauty and the wonder of our world and to eliminate the anger and hatred …? What can you do TODAY… this very moment?
A central teaching in most spiritual traditions is: What you wish to experience, provide for another. Look to see, now, what it is you wish to experience - in your own life, and in the world. Then see if there is another for whom you may be the source of that. If you wish to experience peace, provide peace for another. If you wish to know that you are safe, cause another to know that they are safe. If you wish to better understand seemingly incomprehensible things, help another to better understand. If you wish to heal your own sadness or anger, seek to heal the sadness or anger of another. Those others are waiting for you now. They are looking to you for guidance, for help, for courage, for strength, for understanding, and for assurance at this hour. Most of all, they are looking to you for love.

 Some interesting research
Libin BM (1987) The cranial mechanism: its relationship to cranial-mandibular function. Journal Prosthetic Dentistry Nov 58(5): 632-638. This review and discussion has raised many points relating the importance of the cranial mechanism to cranial-mandibular function. It emphasises the relationship between the temperomandibular joint (TMJ) and the 106 joints of the complete cranio-mandibular mechanism, bringing the cranial mechanism into the forefront of dental theory and practice. Every phase of dentistry is affected by mandibular position, and the cranial mechanism offers the dentist an added dimension for solving and avoiding clinical problems. Techniques for correction and evaluation of the cranial mechanism require a thorough knowledge of head and neck anatomy. Great satisfaction can be derived from being able to relax a lateral pterygoid muscle by diagnosing and correcting a frontal bone lesion, often within a few minutes. The importance of relaxing the musculature before final occlusal equilibration is even greater. As more research is devoted to the cranial mechanism, the findings will continue to supply answers to the unmanageable problems that confront dentists.
Pick, M. (1994). A preliminary single case magnetic resonance imaging investigation into maxillary frontal-parietal manipulation and its short-term effect upon the intercranial structures of an adult human brain. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. 17(3):168-73.
Objective: to investigate the hypothesis that external cranial manipulation can cause change within the structures of the human brain. (single 42 year old subject in private office).
Conclusion: The present study supports the theory that external cranial manipulation affects the structure of the brain. It also suggests support for the theory regarding suture (the joint between two cranial bones) mobility.

 Complementary Therapies - Acupressure
Acupuncture is a form of therapy and of health maintenance first developed by the Chinese about 5,000 years ago. It is usually practised as a part of the complex system of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Special points on the skin are stimulated in order to affect an energy (Qi) balance in the body. These points are located on bioelectrical channels of energy called Meridians. The Qi circulates through all organs and parts of the body through fourteen main channels.
Acupressure works on the same principle - replacing needles with your fingers, so …. this is a wonderful self-help tool. Acupressure is safe, and if pressure is accidentally applied to the wrong pressure/acupuncture point, the energy will rebalance itself in a day or two with no ill-effects. The contra-indications for use are: don’t apply pressure over open wounds, scar tissue, boils, blisters, rashes, varicose veins, inflammation or swelling and there are certain points that must not be used during pregnancy or on people with high/low blood pressure. There are three ways of stimulating the pressure points. Calming, tonifying and dispersing.
To tonify or nourish Qi apply stationary pressure with thumb or finger perpendicular to the point and hold for 2 minutes. To disperse Qi apply moving pressure in a circular motion or pumping in and out of the point fpr 2 minutes. This encourages the smooth flow of Qi.
Meridian key
Sp = spleen : B = bladder : CV = conception vessel :
H = heart : HP = heart protector or pericardium
For this time of the year, we’re going to look at helping depression and insomnia. Tonify points SP6 CAUTION never use this point during pregnancy), B15 and CV14. Calming H7 and HP6 may also be helpful. [For severe depression and/or insomnia seek professional guidance.] Also try jasmine, sandalwood, chamomile and bergamot oils AND exercise.
SP6 - this point is 4 finger widths above the inside ankle bone, just behind the tibia (the large leg bone. Tonify it to stimulate the production of Qi and blood to nourish the mind and heart.
B15 - 2 finger widths either side of the spine, level with the 5th and 6th rib. Calm both points with your palm.
CV14 - 8 finger widths above the navel on the mid line of the belly. Calm this point with your palm.
Calming B15 and CV14 invigorates the circulation of Qi and blood in the heart and calm the mind.
 Blood Type Diet
As those of you who see me often know, I’ve been talking about this diet for the past few months. I myself have experienced a change for the better and have noted and heard similar reports from many others.
This diet was first introduced to me by a friend and client. After seeing and hearing what avoiding certain foods and concentrating on those most beneficial to her type had done for her, I went out and bought the books - thanks Carolyn…
There are three books - Eat Right for Your Type, Cook Right for Your Type and Live Right for Your Type. The author is Dr Peter J D’Adamo. He talks about the chemical reactions between the foods we eat and our blood type. Each blood type possesses a different antigen with specific chemical structures, hence the different blood types respond to food in different ways.
This is the most sensible suggestion to eating that I’ve heard. He also talks about avoiding and NOT never eating those foods on your avoid list. I quote D’Adamo’s Key to Eating Right "Highly beneficial foods act like medicine in your body. Neutral foods act like food in your body. Avoid foods act like poison in your body." In my experience this diet is teaching me to be aware of my body in a way that I have never been…..
 Body Parts
The Maxillae - Latin for upper jaw.
The maxillae begin to ossify 7 weeks after conception into 2 portions. They are the second largest bones of the face and form the lower part of the eye orbit and also parts of the nostrils and mouth. The thickness of bone varies greatly in the maxillae.
Each maxilla articulates with a minimum of 9 bones, as well as its own teeth and the mandibular teeth opposite. Eleven groups of muscles attach to each maxilla. Although the very strong musculature of the tongue is not attached to the maxillae, it plays an important dynamic role, depending on how it is used in pressing up on the hard palate when thoughtful, playful or stressed.
We swallow, on average, 1,800 times a day. Each swallow typically means a compression of the teeth, and may add further muscular tension to what may already be chronic TMJ tension. The TMJ (tempromandibular joint, where the mandible fits into the upper jaw) usually floats loosely within their capsules.
Energetically, the maxillae are the upper limit of the throat chakra and so relate to communication, tenacity, affection, threat display, attack and defence. It is also creativity in song, poetry and speech, as well as the opposite polarity, silence. The maxillae tend to hold anger, resentment, even bitterness, as well as loyalty. Teeth are pride, vanity, youthfulness, attractiveness and strength.
Surgically speaking, the maxillae are the most important bones in the face. This is because of the air sinuses and the frequent eruption of root canal decay into them.
For all their apparent strength the maxillae are very easily destabilised.
The widespread use of dental braces, bridges, ill-fitting dentures and incompatible fillings plays havoc with facial mechanics(1). The maxillae with much less freedom of movement than the mandible have a much more difficult time absorbing orthodontice that inhibit or stop cranial wave formations passing through them.
The maxillae are a key player in TMJ dysfunction and contribute a decisive component to migraine headaches.

About Yoga Dale Spence ND, DO, BWY Dip
The word Yoga shares the same roots as the word yoke, and means to unite or yoke together. It refers to the union of mind, body and spirit. It is a system of exercises developed thousands of years ago in India aiming at the balanced, healthy growth and development of an individual at all levels. I think it is one of the few systems of exercise or practice that does encompass all aspects of the individual human. It is distinct from any religion, and, as I see it, the practice of yoga does not interfere with the practice of any existing religion. The whole practice of Yoga can be summed up in two words – ‘being aware’. Awareness of what you are doing; what muscles need to work to perform a particular movement; the quality of your breathing; the quality, location and focus of your attention; the qualities of your motives in life...
 The Moon
from Moon Magick by D J Conway
Deep within our subconscious minds is buried the ancient knowledge that the Moon has a real power over our moods, actions and lives. Unfortunately, many of us - even those who may have secretly wondered about the Moon’s powers - have convinced ourselves that the Moon has no influence on anything but the tides. But evidence shows that the Moon does affect our behaviour. For example, it’s no coincidence that incidences of suicide and deadly violence rise consistently during a Full Moon. It only makes sense to conclude that the Moon impacts us differently at different times.
Ice Moon, Storm Moon, Wild Moon - 13 Jan to 12 Feb. In many parts of the northern hemisphere February is truly a month of ice. A dormant time when all activity and life appears to be low key. In Celtic and Roman cultures it was a month for spiritual purification and initiation. January was a time of ending old cycles and preparing for new one. February is a time to prepare the environment and the body, mind and spirit for new life experiences.
Storm Moon, Seed Moon, Crow Moon - 12 Feb to 14 Mar. This month was sacred to the Roman god Mars. The Spring Equinox falls on 21st/22nd March. Eostre was the German goddess of rebirth. She was originally the goddess of the Spring Equinox whose name was changed to Easter by the Christians. This is a month of new beginnings; balance of Light and Dark.
