WELL BEING NEWSLETTER : Information and Inspiration from Patricia Spence
Issue 12 - November 2004
Welcome to the new format of the newsletter.
 Greetings,
I've just been looking back, as one does when changes are about to occur, to see that this newsletter first went out in October 2001! And yes, the time has come for a change. I've decided to go electronic and will be issuing this newsletter by email on a monthly basis, except to those places that take multiple copies and those people who just can't manage email, but still want to receive the newsletter. So, if you would like to continue to receive this newsletter please send me your email address. I would like to reassure everyone that we will not give your name and email address to any third party and your details will only be held on my database. Your request to have your details deleted from my database would be honoured. Dale has also given our website a new look, so please take a look and let us know what you think. As most of you know by now, I love to spend the first part of this time of the year recharging my batteries snuggled down beside the fire. I wish you a very good winter season, and you and yours a Merry Xmas and a fruitful and successful 2005. May all our changes and new directions be good.
The seat of knowledge is in the head; of wisdom, in the heart. We are sure to judge wrong if we do not feel right. - Will Hazlitt
Natural Killer Cells
I attended a talk on the above at the October Complementary & Natural Healthcare Expo given by Dr Roger Lichy M.B., ChB.,D.Obst. R.C.O.G.,M. F.Hom.,D.H.Psych. (Whew, he's a well labelled man! and very passionate about this subject too.) He spent 10 years as an NHS doctor in hospitals and general practice. He left as a result of health problems which also initiated his “journey of self-healing”. He has a clinic in Harley Street and works at the Bristol Cancer Help Centre. (That's the background … )
According to his research/observation Natural Killer (NK) cell activity is reduced by:
sleep deprivation, stress, bereavement, overwhelming emotions, emotional numbness, energy trauma, environmental toxins, acute fear.
NK cell activity is increased by:
laughter, meditation, crying (releasing pent-up / suppressed emotion), joy, writing.
NK cells act independently from the blood stream and operate mainly at night. Their activity is also closely linked to the production of melatonin, according to Dr Linchy.
According to Dr Upledger, NK cell attack is induced by some method yet unknown. “It simply selects appropriate target cells and destroys them.” It is known that recognition of the target cell requires cell-to-cell contact. “NK cells patrol the body, constantly checking for targets in the form of abnormal body cells, bacteria and viruses. … Once a target is recognised by contact, the NK cell binds to the target cell and activates its killer (lytic) machinery, which destroys the target. Granules within the NK cellular cytoplasm seem to inject lethal substances into the target cells.” Macrophages and other phagocytes (the bin men (or women) of the body) clean up the debris left by the NK cells.
Perhaps all of the above accounts for individual experiences with similar symptoms.
What Doctor's Don't Tell You: EU Vitamin Ban: The fight goes on
”The legal challenge against the Food Supplements Directive (FSD) goes on at the slow pace that is the preserve of the law. The Alliance for Natural Health has this week filed its written observations with the European Court of Justice as part of its challenge to overturn the directive that will ban many natural food vitamin and mineral supplements throughout Europe.
This is the latest move in a process that began last January when the Alliance achieved a referral from the UK's High Court to the European courts.
If the Alliance fails, the FSD will be introduced next August 1, and will allow for sale only those products that contain nutrients included in a 'positive list'. The list favours synthetic vitamin and inorganic mineral ingredients-strangely, the type manufactured in bulk by the pharmaceutical industry-and omits 300 sources of vitamins and minerals, many of which are found in foods. As a consequence many natural foods will also disappear from the shelves.

Yoga - Trianga Suriya Namaskar (Three-pronged Salute to the Sun) Dale Spence ND, DO, BWY Dip
My classes have been developing over the years. As time progresses I find myself drawn to a particular set of sequences, a collecting of threads from various disciplines and practices. These include influences from the Ashtanga Yoga series, Iyengar Yoga, Surat Shabd Yoga, osteopathy, pranayama (coming from the Gitananda school, as taught by Phillip Xerri).
It is not aiming at “fancy poses”, or anything exotic. Rather it is aiming at an overall strengthening, balancing, toning of the whole being.
In this sequence I have developed I am trying to provide more than physical asana with some breathing and/or relaxation at the end. It is my intention is to encompass as much as possible in the 1½ hrs, and be able to work and progress in areas not usually encountered in classes.
The work that I have been doing has naturally divided into three areas (angas = limb, hence trianga = three limbed).
First Salute - Asana: Physical Body, the outside sun.
The health and mobility of the spine is crucial to overall health. When compromised, the impact physiologically and anatomically is profound and far reaching. When you are 20 it does not really matter - the body can adapt to poor posture, diet, exercise, etc. By the age of 40 the bodys capacity to adapt is much reduced, and joint wear and tear (etc) are well under way. I think the Salute to the Sun series A and B from the Ashtanga sequence is an excellent sequence. Excellent for spinal health and flexibility - increasing strength in the whole body, especially arms, shoulders, back, legs. I use these A&B directly and have a C that consists of a sequence of standing postures. These are linked by front and back lying sequences. In all pretty much a full body work. After the linked A-B-C we do some additional work that varies from week to week which augments and extends the work of the preceding sequences.
Second Salute - Pranayama: The Breath, heat of the sun
What we are doing here is aimed at an overall expansion and strengthening of the breathing apparatus. Bringing the breathing process under conscious control by exploring the main pranayama practices and also the preparatory practices that lead to a safe increase in capacity and potential. Increasing the duration of each round of the breathing cycle. Increasing the number of rounds of breaths. We go into the non-physical aspects of pranayama - prana and nadis, balancing, increasing the flow. When done deliberately and with focus all of this is internalising. It increases awareness and deepens concentration.
Third Salute - Dharana : The Internal Sun
Pranayama automatically leads into concentration practices that continue the calming and focusing. We incorporate various concentration techniques - visualisation, mantra, location of focus of attention, listening. When done deliberately and with focus, attention to detail and awareness of the breath, the entire sequence is internalising. We also practice various relaxation techniques. These all extend the internal work.
There is so much today that leads our focus of attention outward: television, advertising, career, computers, entertainment. There is not much that leads to an internal focus of attention. In the same way that a limb unused gets weaker and wastes away, the capacity to concentrate weakens if unused. Symptoms of this include restlessness, boredom, emotional swings, a general rankling dissatisfaction that you cannot quite put your finger on. The concentration practices begin to cut through all of this. The effects are a deepening sense of calm, stability, contentment not dependent on circumstances. I personally think that this is the arena where real yoga happens.
The whole practice is a repetition, similar patterns each time around. But the practice builds strength and stamina, tone and flexibility, awareness and focus. Your body changes, your psyche changes - stronger, more flexible, more content. Changes and improvements are not dramatic. Rather slow and steady, more like an acorn becoming an oak. To me, that is what yoga is about, and that is what this sequence is aimed at.
Life Coaching
Life Coaching is about re-education and change.
We all accumulate a set of beliefs during our life time from parents, teachers, peers, the environment, etc and we tend to live our lives according to these beliefs. Some of our beliefs may serve us very well and a lot (in my personal experience) don't. For some of us these beliefs stop us achieving, living our lives to the full, living peacefully and joyfully and knowing the magic of life. They create our limitations and ceilings and prevent us moving forward and embracing change. With techniques borrowed from various disciplines, such as NLP and personal development, Life Coaching helps us change our set of beliefs to ones that suit and serve us NOW. Life Coaching helps us feel the fear and do it anyway. Change negative thinking and feeling to positive, inspired action. Create a way of life that we've longed for or is right for us now. Some us can do this for ourselves, some of us need a little help now and again. There's never one source, one medium for helping us bring positive, creative change to our lives. In this day and age there is also a plethora of books available. If you're looking for a book or audio tape find one that `speaks' to you, that `speaks your language'. As we take control of our beliefs and find our gifts and abilities our world changes - the Law of Attraction. Like attracts like.
Look at all the people in the world who have really achieved great things. Can you imagine Richard Branson creating his empire and feeling bad about himself - no, or feeling negative about a project - no. He had to feel good about himself and positive, passionate and single minded about his projects to be successful. Now not all of us want to achieve what Richard Branson has achieved, but the principle is the same.
Life is an ongoing process of learning and the joy of discovery is delicious.
“If you have made mistakes … there is always another chance for you … you may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing we call `failure' is not the falling down, but the staying down.” - Mary Pickford, movie star
