1. Greetings, the harvest festivals are over and winter draws in - although the weather doesn't seem quite sure yet. With the change in the length of daylight hours I have started taking 1mg of melatonin daily which I have previously used as an antidote for jetlag. I have also put my 81year old mother on it. It has helped enormously with regulating my sleep pattern (my mother's experience too) and I'm hoping that it will help reduce my mother's eye pressure too (she has glaucoma). Researchers say this has only happened in healthy subjects, but I have my fingers crossed for my mum. Melatonin is not available in the UK.
Happy Halloween.

2. CranioSacral Therapy (CST) : Ear Infection
Otitis media (glue ear) is an infection of the middle ear, the area just behind the eardrum. It happens when the eustachian (auditory) tubes, which drain fluid and bacteria from the middle ear out to the throat, become blocked.
Blockage of the auditory tubes may be caused by any number of situations, including: respiratory infection, allergies, tobacco smoke or other environmental irritants, infected or overgrown adenoids, sudden increase in pressure (such as during an airplane flight), drinking while lying on the back (such as with a propped bottle), excess mucus and saliva produced during teething, and cranial bone restriction (which may have occurred during the birth process).
Otitis media is common in infants and children, because their immune systems are immature and their auditory tubes are easily clogged. It is important that children with otitis media receive treatment because there can be serious complications if the infection is left untreated.
Signs & Symptoms: Individuals experiencing otitis media may exhibit some or all of the following symptoms:
Acute pain
Fever
Hearing difficulty
General signs of illness such as vomiting and diarrhoea
In infants, incessant crying
Therapeutic Approach: Although ear infections often clear up by themselves, there can be serious complications if left untreated. Therefore, an antibiotic is usually prescribed. In addition to conventional medical measures, which may also include surgery to insert small drainage tubes (grommets) in ears, complementary modalities such as CranioSacral Therapy can play an important role in a comprehensive therapeutic approach.
CranioSacral Therapy can facilitate more normal function of the auditory tubes by normalising or balancing cranial bone and membrane movement and helps prevent the scarring that sometimes occurs with the insertion of grommets. In addition, CranioSacral Therapy has been found helpful in boosting immune system function.

Case History: A mother brought her 3 year old son to see me. He had glue ear and an off and on cough, sometimes wet, sometimes dry. His left incisor had only just begun to appear too and he was a grumpy wee soul. His birth was normal but delivery was very quick which I suspect was the reason for his symptoms. His cranial membranes were torqued creating pressure and tension within the cranium which expressed in his ears and upper jaw. I saw him 3 times, working mainly on his cranium and in his mouth to release bones, cartilage and muscle. The gap for his growing tooth widened and his ear ache subsided.

3. Massage : Aching Mind, Aching Back
The typical portrait of depression is an individual with slumped shoulders, slow movement and a defeated look. While there are a number of potential consequences of depression, you might be surprised to know that depression could actually be associated with back pain.
In a recent study, 744 members of a large health plan, ages 70 years and older, were given a baseline assessment that included evaluation of demographic, medical, physical and cognitive status. Their depressive symptoms were defined based on the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies - Depression Scale (CES-DS). At baseline, 153 of the subjects were found to be depressed; over a 12-month follow-up period, 186 participants reported disabling back pain during one to two months, with 91 reporting back pain during three months.
The researchers concluded that the presence of depressive symptoms was independently associated with the occurrence of disabling back pain.
Depression and back pain can be disabling, independent of one another; but when the two are combined, the results can be devastating.
Massage therapy not only helps alleviate back pain, it can help calm the mind and lift the spirits, thereby reducing bouts of depression.

4. Home Remedies :
Banana Peels
Apparently, banana skin gets rid of warts and, when, toasted to a crisp, gives roses and other flowers a huge boost of potassium to help them flower. Gardeners swear by it! [One of my clients doesn't even do that, she just digs the fresh skins into the soil.]
For warts: rub the inside of a little piece of a banana peel on a wart every night. You should see results within one to two weeks. [I wonder if that would work on varukas too?] What a lot of uses for banana skin!
Calluses: Are the calluses on your feet giving you a headache? Take 5 aspirin! But don't swallow them. Crush the aspirin and mix with a tablespoon each of lemon juice and water to make a paste. Apply the paste to the calluses on your feet and then put your feet in plastic bags and wrap them with warm towels. Try to not walk around for at least 10 minutes. Unwrap your feet and buff them with a pumice stone. All that hard skin should just flake right off. [What an unusual remedy.]

5. Life Coaching :
I recently lost a patient suddenly to cancer, so I've been thinking about loss and grief - not only in death (spouse, family, friend, pet), but in a relationship (and I include children -no matter what their age- e.g. in divorce), a job, for us women the loss of periodic blood at menopause, the loss of health (and other things that are individualistic) with diseases like cancer, MS, ME etc.
There are various stages to grieving and a wide range of emotions felt at each stage. Rather than suggest that there is a set pattern to grief I believe that it's different for each of us and that there is no one emotion experienced first or last! The list of signs and symptoms should end in resolution/ integration and if not I suggest seeing someone about it. It is also advisable to postpone major life changes while in the acute stages of grieving.
The emotions of grieving are: Denial
Disbelief
Confusion
Shock
Sadness
Yearning
Anger
Humiliation
Despair
Guilt

6. Broccoli Sprouts are one of nature's most concentrated sources of glucosinolates, a phytonutrient with the ability to promote detoxification enzymes.
High tissue burdens of heavy or toxic metals have been suggested to be a common biological burden for most people. Did you know that kelp and other seaweeds contain alginates which can help bind heavy metals and allow them to transit more safely through your digestive tract?
